After traveling to a variety of Chinese cities last summer in which elaborate tourist hotels were flanked by destitute hutongs, I thought I had a relatively good picture of Indian society. However, as a I beared witness to a twenty-story, five billion dollar home owned by a family of five, dwarfing the millions of impoverished citizens, my mouth dropped. As called attention to by Johnnie, another Peddie student on this trip, the huge disparity of wealth was quite jarring. Previously, I had looked upon India as just a country abundant with... Indians. I never contemplated the truly vast religious diversity that encompasses the country. Furthermore, the devotion Indians have to their faiths despite potentially horrid or discriminatory implications was surprising as well. I hope to gain a glimpse of the lives millions Indians endure within the Dharavi slums.
